Abstract

Pastoral counselors are among the helping professions that require various competencies in both theological and psychological fields. It is not uncommon for them to experience countertransference or burnout while providing counseling services. The inability of counselors, especially in dealing with their anxiety during counseling sessions, needs attention to ensure that they can provide services pleasing to God. This research aims to establish the content validity of an instrument developed by the researcher, named the Candidate Pastoral Counselor Performance Anxiety Instrument (CPCPAI), consisting of 44 items. A descriptive quantitative method using the Aiken's formula, commonly used to assess content validity, was employed in this study. The CPCPAI instrument was evaluated by 5 experts who were considered professionals due to their previous experience in pastoral counseling. The results of the research indicate that 8 items were deemed invalid by the experts, with Aiken's V values less than 0.81. This research represents the initial step for future researchers to measure the anxiety of candidate pastoral counselors using the CPCPAI instrument, as it possesses adequate content validity of its items. Measuring the anxiety of counselors is essential because if counselors cannot manage their anxiety, it may be advisable for them to discontinue the counseling process.
